NB IOT basic information
  
Narrow band Internet of things (NB IOT) has become an important branch of the Internet of things. NB IOT is built in cellular network and consumes only about 180khz bandwidth. He explained to reporters the commercial and technical advantages of Nb IOT. From the commercial level, cellular network covers more than 50% of the global geographical area and 90% of the population, which is the most complete network. Operators are very urgent in developing NB IOT. "Even though the industry has tried its best to promote the rapid development of Nb IOT, operators still think that the development progress is not fast enough, which puts great pressure on suppliers." Yu Quan revealed.

The future of the Internet of things (IOT) is full of imagination. Huawei believes that there will be 100 billion connections in the world by 2025, most of which are related to the Internet of things.
  
The requirements of Internet of things for connection are very different from traditional cellular network, so narrow band cellular Internet of things (nb-iot) emerges as the times require. This emerging technology driven by the telecom industry has the characteristics of wide coverage, multiple connections, low speed, low cost, low power consumption and excellent architecture, which has great commercial potential.
  
Machina predicts that nb-iot will cover 25% of IOT connectivity in the future. For operators facing user saturation and Ott impact, nb-iot will tap into the vast new market and bring more than three times of connection growth; while for the traditional industry practitioners who are actively transforming and upgrading, it also has the inherent advantages of operators' network in terms of adaptability, network performance, manageability, controllability and reliability.
  
What is nb-iot?
  
Under the "scissors gap" of demographic dividend and traffic revenue, the Internet of things has become a new source of revenue growth for operators. Take Vodafone as an example, the number of mobile users increased by only 3%, the number of Internet of things connections increased by 33.5%, and the related business revenue increased by 24.7%. However, traditional 2G, 3G, 4G technologies can not fully meet the requirements of low power consumption and low cost of IOT equipment.
  
The birth of nb-iot is not accidental. It is the expectation of the telecom industry for the Internet of things market. Its predecessor can be traced back to the nb-m2m jointly proposed by Huawei and Vodafone in May 2014.
  
The concept of narrow-band cellular Internet of things initiated by these two companies has been widely recognized by the industry as soon as it is proposed. Subsequently, more and more industry giants such as Qualcomm and Ericsson joined in the standardization research in this direction. In order to promote the unification of standards and facilitate the industrial development, 3GPP finally reached an agreement in the ran plenary session in September 2015 to establish NB IOT as the only standard for narrowband cellular Internet of things, and started to write the agreement for work item. NB IOT has significant advantages in the application of the Internet of things, which is incomparable to the traditional cellular network technology, Bluetooth, Wi Fi and other short-distance transmission technologies. First of all, its coverage is wider. In the same frequency band, the gain of nb-iot is 20dB and the coverage area is 100 times larger than the existing network.
  
Secondly, it can support massive connections. One sector of nb-iot can support 100000 connections. At present, there are about 5 million physical sites in the world. Assuming that nb-iot is fully deployed with three sectors per site, the number of IOT terminals that can be accessed will be as high as 450 billion.
  
At the same time, the power consumption of nb-iot is lower, only 1 / 10 of 2G, and the standby time of terminal module can be as long as 10 years. In terms of cost, the module cost is expected to be reduced to less than $5. In the future, with the scale effect and technology evolution brought by market development, power consumption and cost are expected to be further reduced.
  
In addition, in terms of supporting big data, the data collected by NB IOT connection can be directly uploaded to the cloud, while Bluetooth, Wi Fi and other technologies have no such convenience.

8. Profit making in telecommunication industry
  
It seems that telecom operators have found a new growth point. Nbiot, a global broadband technology forum, was held in April 2015. NB IOT is the latest technology proposed by mainstream telecom operators and equipment manufacturers in 3GPP, the global standards organization, for the Internet of things market.
  
The telecom industry has been looking forward to the Internet of things market for 10 years. However, traditional 2G, 3G and 4G networks do not meet the requirements of low power consumption and low cost of Internet of things devices. Telecom companies bet on Internet of things
  
Before the number of 7.1 billion mobile users in the world, 230 million Internet of things connections do not account for much proportion, but mobile users have been saturated, and the Internet of things is just starting, so this is one of the few services worthy of expectation in the telecom industry.
  
At present, most telecom operators encounter the problem of stagnant growth. According to the data, of the 18 telecom operators listed in the Fortune 500 in 2015, 7 of them experienced a decline in revenue. The revenue of Spain Telecom, the world's ninth largest operator, dropped as much as 11%.
  
The saturation of mobile communication market is the main dilemma for operators. According to Vodafone's financial report, each mobile user can contribute $105 in annual revenue to Vodafone, while each Internet of things connection contributes $27.8 per year. However, providing network services for mobile users requires huge network construction costs and maintenance costs. Almost all Internet of things services are provided on the basis of the existing network, and the cost is extremely low, 27.8 US dollars, most of which are profits.
  
At present, Vodafone's Internet of things services are distributed in 27 countries, but most of them are still deployed on traditional mobile networks. The growth rate of Vodafone's Internet of things services is restricted by power consumption, connection limit and cost. In May 2014, Vodafone and Huawei proposed nbm2m technology, trying to provide low-cost, low-power IOT connectivity by improving the existing network. Nbm2m is also the predecessor of Nb IOT. In September this year, the international organization for standards (3GPP) passed the project decision of "NB IOT" in Phoenix, USA. according to the plan, Nb IOT standard will be frozen in 3gppr13 in March 2016, and then the scale commercial application of Nb IOT will start soon.
  
According to the statistics of Machina research, a global Internet of things research organization, in 2015, the number of Internet of things connections of global operators was 230 million, which contributed about 7 billion dollars to the market of operators. This number will reach 24 billion dollars in 2020. According to a Huawei staff member, by 2020, the proportion of IOT devices connected to the operator's network may reach 20%, and the proportion will continue to increase, and the proportion of Wi Fi and Bluetooth Based connections will decrease.
  
Giant alliance or end "fragmentation"
  
"Compared with Wi Fi, Bluetooth and other technologies, Nb IOT's most obvious advantages are data collection and energy consumption." "The data collected by Wi Fi, Bluetooth and other technologies are transmitted to the user's mobile phone, so it is difficult to form big data. Based on these characteristics, a large number of wearable devices, intelligent doors, windows and thermometers are the market of Nb IOT. The huge market not only attracts telecom players, but also a number of chip and sensor giants such as Qualcomm and Intel have joined the Nb IOT camp, and their market far exceeds that of telecom operators.
  
According to Huawei, a number of chip companies such as Qualcomm, quectel and Swiss enterprise ublox are Huawei's partners in NB IOT technology. In addition, Huawei's multiple product lines have also launched joint research and development of the Internet of things. Neul bought Huawei chips in the UK for $25 million last year. At present, the company has launched NB IOT chip. Previously, Huawei also launched the liteos operating system for the Internet of things.
  
In July this year, Intel, a giant dedicated to Internet of things chips, also joined the Nb IOT camp. In the same month, Intel, Ericsson and Nokia announced their commitment to the next generation of wireless connectivity for IOT. Before 3GPP officially named NB IOT, nb-lte was also one of the technical precursors. Intel announced at the time that it would provide a roadmap for the nb-lte chipset, with products available in 2016. It is reported that some customers have already started to test the pre nb-iot, and it is expected to be ready for commercial use in the second half of 2016. Commercial deployment is expected in early 2017.
  
The preparation of nb-iot forum and the establishment of open laboratory indicate that nb-iot industry has entered a new stage of development, which will strongly promote the rapid maturity and commercial process of the industry. 10 nb-iot new IOT trial commercial
